Frequently Asked Questions
What areas do you serve?
We are a mobile dog training business that services areas from Lake Forest, Highland Park, Deerfield, Buffalo Grove, to Evanston and Barrington Illinois. If you're outside our regular area, contact us! We may still be able to help.
Who is behind Elite Dog Training?
Rich Ehrenberg has over 35 years of experience working with dogs. He has academic training and spent seven years as a veterinary technician mentor.
How does your training differ from others?
We bring training to your home, working in your real environment rather than a remote facility. We don’t rely on tricks or gimmicks. Our focus is on clear, consistent communication, kindness, and lasting behavioral change.
What services do you offer?
We offer a range of training services, including:
- In-Home Dog Training (private sessions in your home)
- Puppy Training (manners, socialization, early guidance)
- Behavior Fixes (jumping, leash pulling, barking, etc.)
- Public Environment Training (training in real-world settings)
- Service Dog / Advanced Obedience / Assistance Training
What levels of training are available?
Rich offers three levels:
- Basic — foundational obedience
- Intermediate — more advanced skills (e.g. off-leash work)
- Master — specialized training such as service dog, handicapped assistance, or advanced obedience
Do you use treats, clickers, or coercive methods?
We emphasize kindness and clear communication. While every dog is different, our goal is to teach behaviors that last because the dog understands and trusts you.
How do I get started?
Simply call (847) 489-0015 or reach out via the Contact page on the website. We’ll discuss your dog’s situation and schedule an initial session in your home.
How long is a training session?
Session length may vary depending on your dog’s needs, the training level, and the issues being addressed. We’ll tailor each session’s duration to suit what’s needed to make meaningful progress.
How many sessions will it take?
That depends on your dog’s age, temperament, history, consistency, and the issues being addressed. Some dogs respond quickly, while others need more time and reinforcement. We’ll provide a plan and estimate once we assess.
Do owners need a role in training?
Absolutely. Your consistency and follow-through are critical. The dog’s success depends on what happens between sessions. We’ll teach you techniques, homework exercises, and guidance so that you become the dog’s strongest trainer.
Can you fix aggression, fear, or extreme behavioral problems?
In many cases, yes, but it depends on the severity, underlying causes, and the dog’s history. We evaluate each dog individually, and for certain cases, further medical or behavioral specialist consultation might be recommended.
At what age should I start training my dog or puppy?
The earlier, the better. Basic manners can begin as soon as your puppy comes home. Even older dogs can learn. Training is most effective when started before problematic habits solidify.
Can you train a dog to be a service or assistance dog?
Yes. At the Master level, we offer advanced training, including service dog / handicapped assistance training.
What if I have a rescue dog or one with “bad habits”?
That’s not a problem. Many dogs come to us with behavior challenges. With patience, consistency, and proper assessment, we can often retrain behaviors and build trust.
What are your fees / pricing?
Our pricing depends on the training level, number of sessions, and the complexity of the dog’s needs. Please contact us directly for a custom quote.
What if I miss or need to reschedule a session?
Please notify us as soon as possible. We typically require advance notice to adjust scheduling, and we’ll work with you to find an alternate time.
Do you offer refresher sessions later?
Yes — many clients request follow-up or “refresher” sessions to reinforce and maintain good behavior over time.
What guarantees do you provide?
While we aim for lasting results, dogs and their environments are dynamic. Success depends heavily on consistent practice by the owner. We commit to providing you with the tools and guidance; continuous effort on your part is essential.
Are there any breeds, sizes, or ages you won’t work with?
No — we work with all breeds, sizes, and ages. What changes is the approach and pace based on the dog’s temperament, background, and needs.
